CAMBODIA, MY ONGOING HELP PROJECT IN RONEAM, TAKEO PROVINCE

My name is Susanne Vendsalu. I am a multidisciplinary artist and since many years I have been wholeheartedly engaged in helping the people of rural Cambodia. I was young when the Red Khmers under the Pol Pot regime terrorised, tortured and killed between 1/4 and 1/3 of its own population between 1975 and 1979. This genocide has never left my mind and therefor I have travelled various times through the country, falling in love with it and its people, I have visited the great ruins of Angkor Wat, I have also visited the Killing Fields and the horrific Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum S21 in Phnom Penh. For many years I have had a sponsor child, Sonita, and I have helped her and her family and the school she attends in Roneam community, Takeo, situated close to the Vietnamese border in the south. I was a member of the Spanish help organisation Global Humanitaria which has now sadly abandoned Cambodia. My desicion is to stay and work directly with non/profit organisations in the country. My first fund raising in 2024 gave 2500 dollars and I privately added much more to be able to help the village, the family of Sonita and the school.
So what did I do with the money?
Below, I present some photos from my visits and the result of my work. I want to thank everyone who contributed to my first fund raising. I am going back this June 2026, and will continue my work. All donations are delivered directly into the project and my own work is totally voluntary. I pay all my costs of trips and accomodation myself. I hope you will be so kind to contribute once again, any amount is helpful no matter how small. 1 euro, 2 euros - Many drops make the river.
The fotos show the visit to the school Prey Phaer and the family in June 2024. Together with my Cambodian colleague "Pi", we decided to give half of the money to the family and the rest to the school. The family dream has been to build a small chicken farm, so the money has been used for material, live stock and other necessities for this purpose.
The school got books and other material and a playground.
My project continues with the aim of being able to help more children with education and livelihood opportunities for families in the rural provinces of south-east Cambodia. We are working to get our new non-profit organisation up and running soon, but everything takes time so I have a temporal donation account at the bottom of this page.

The main problem in this rural part is poverty and difficulty to find work. The chicken farm can now provide the family with an income. After 4 months, it is happening!

I brought some gifts to the family from Spain. We are invited to eat together with the headmaster and a teacher from the school. Pi has to translate everything as nobody else speaks English. I try to say their names and make them laugh, Khmer is difficult.

Next day we take them to the market.

ONLY 7 PERSONS SURVIVED THE S21
